By the year 1860, most of the traditions we associate with Christmas were well established in America. Christmas trees had gained in popularity since Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, set up the first tree in Windsor Castle in 1841. Stockings hung by the chimney, Santa Claus, and carolers, were found in abundance. These are just a few of the many customs that Civil War soldiers tried to replicate in their camps during the war years. Alas, their first Christmas was often far from merry. One soldier, Private Robert A. Moore of the 17th Mississippi – who had spent time in the Aldie area early in 1861 – wrote in his diary from Loudoun County, “This is Christmas & a very dull Christmas it has been to me. Had an egg-nog tonight but did not enjoy it very much as we had no ladies to share it with us.”

Site manager Tracy J. Gillespie, staff member of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, believes the church’s intriguing history as a hospital and temporary prison during the Civil War will be of interest to all. “Many cars pass by Mt. Zion every day,” says Gillespie, “and most of the drivers glance at the old brick church and wonder about its history. Now is their chance to find out just what went on here.”
Used as a place of worship by members of the Old School Baptists from 1851 until 1980,
Mt. Zion Church and its adjoining cemetery not only witnessed fighting during the Civil War, but also served in the aftermath of battle as a hospital for the wounded and a final resting place for some who fought in the war.

With the goal of providing teachers with tools to help lead their classes on naturalist escorted trips to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and Potomac Overlook Regional Park, the workshop included lessons about the natural history of the Potomac River Basin and its biodiversity.
“I was looking for resources to further develop my curriculum, and this workshop provided me with so many resources that I feel I can really start to do that and make sure my facts are straight,” said Patience Galvan, 3rd grade teacher at Bush Hill Elementary School in Alexandria.
Several local experts gave informational sessions on wetland habitat, woodland and meadow areas at Meadowlark, pollinators in the environment and the Potomac River Basin. The workshop included tours of the native tree collection at Meadowlark and the Korean Bell Garden. Participants and experts discussed the use of this information to meet curriculum goals, as well as techniques of interpretation in the classroom.

Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority continues its commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War on Saturday and Sunday, September 24th and 25th, when it hosts re-enactors portraying Union troops in the days following the cavalry engagements in Aldie, Middleburg and Upperville in June of 1863. The sounds of gunfire were barely fading when wounded Union and Confederate soldiers were taken to Mt. Zion Church following the bloody fighting just west of the church site – fighting that turned out to be the prelude to the famous battle at Gettysburg just days later. The church was used as a field hospital both for soldiers wounded in battle, and for those felled by heatstroke, typhoid fever, or other illnesses.

Historical Medicine Re-enactor Nick Kalenich and his comrades of the 28th Virginia Regiment will don Union uniforms for the weekend and recreate life in camp as well as medical practices of the Civil War time period. Musket firing is scheduled for 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with an additional 4:00 firing on Saturday. The public is invited to visit their camp, step inside the church-turned-hospital for demonstrations of medical procedures of the time, and stroll through the adjacent cemetery where Civil War veterans are buried. Hours for this special program are 9:00 – 5 p.m. on Saturday the 24th, and 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday the 25th.

The 1851 Mt. Zion Baptist Church, sitting alongside Rt. 50 east of Gilbert’s Corner, will open its doors to the public for guided tours and living history programs on the fourth Sunday of each month, May 22nd through October 23rd, from 12 to 5 p.m. Site supervisor Tracy J.

Used as a place of worship by members of the Old School, or Primitive, Baptists from 1851 until 1980, Mt. Zion Church and its adjoining cemetery not only witnessed fighting during the Civil War, but also served in the aftermath of battle as a hospital for the wounded and a final resting place for some who fought in the war. It’s also known as the first, and frequent, meeting site of Confederate guerilla fighter John Singleton Mosby and his Rangers. Local legend refers to a lit candle in a church window that would signal Mosby’s men when it was time for a rendezvous. Rumor has it that a lit candle can occasionally be glimpsed in a window even today.

“We’d like to think it’s a combination of some of our great theming efforts and the heat we’ve seen in June and July,” said NVRPA Executive Director Paul Gilbert. “In any event, we’re seeing unprecedented numbers, even for this time of year.” Gilbert isn’t exaggerating either. To date, NVRPA waterparks have seen a total of just under 40,000 more visitors in 2010 versus last year, an astonishing leap. By comparison, that’s roughly 12,000 more people than the entire population of the City of Falls Church.
