Irish Heritage Program to be hosted at

Carlyle House Historic Park

Fairfax, VA (March 1, 2010) – Carlyle House Historic Park will host its Irish Heritage Program on Saturday, March 6th from 2-4 p.m. immediately following Alexandria’s annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Enjoy hot apple cider, Irish music, dancing and entertainment of the late 1790’s. Make your own shamrock pin and learn the history behind the symbol.

The historic Carlyle House was completed in 1753 by British merchant John Carlyle for his bride, Sarah Fairfax of Belvoir, member of one of the most prestigious families in colonial Virginia.  On the National Register of Historic Places, Carlyle House is architecturally unique in Alexandria as the only stone, 18th-century Palladian-style house.

William Herbert and his wife, Sarah Carlyle Herbert, were the second owners of Carlyle House.  William Herbert, a leader in the town of Alexandria, was originally from Muckross, Ireland.

Carlyle House Historic Park is a property of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.  Hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Guided tours are available on the half hour.  Adult admission fee is $5.00.
