John Carlyle’s Birthday Celebration at Carlyle House Historic Park

Fairfax, VA (January 19, 2010) – On Saturday, February 6th from noon to 4 p.m., visitors will be welcomed into the candle-lit Carlyle House for a musical celebration of John Carlyle’s 50th birthday in 1770.  Costumed interpreters will be dancing and performing eighteenth-century music throughout the house.  Join in as John Carlyle’s young daughters, Sarah and Anne, receive music and decorum lessons and entertain the guests with spinet music.

The historic Carlyle House was completed in 1753 by British merchant John Carlyle for his bride, Sarah Fairfax of Belvoir, member of one of the most prestigious families in colonial Virginia.  On the National Register of Historic Places, Carlyle House is architecturally unique in Alexandria as the only stone, 18th-century Palladian-style house.

Carlyle House Historic Park is a property of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.  Hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Guided tours are available on the half hour.  Adult admission fee is $5.00.
