The 100-foot-wide W&OD has been called "the skinniest park in Virginia." But it is also one of the longest parks, 45 miles of paved trail for walking, running, bicycling and skating and 32 miles of adjacent gravel trail for horseback riding. Built on the roadbed of the former Washington & Old Dominion Railroad, the multi-use W&OD Trail runs through the urban heartland and countryside of Northern Virginia.
Attentiion W&OD Trail Users: Starting December 14 the Broad Street (Route 7) bridge, Little Falls Street bridge, and the Sycamore Street bridge will have new boards installed over the next few weeks. Please exercise caution while passing through these areas and heed all detour signage through these areas. Thank you for your patience.
W&OD Trail Detour Information
The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA), in cooperation with Dominion Virginia Power, has announced a 2 mile detour of the W&OD Trail between mile markers 36 and 38, beginning in mid-December 2009, to enable Dominion to bury a transmission line under the trail. The two organizations negotiated a paved detour, which will keep the trail open safely to the public throughout the one-year construction process.
