When the lots for the new city of Alexandria were auctioned in 1749, John Carlyle purchased two of the most expensive, numbers 41 and 42. The site, between the Potomac River and Market Square, was an ideal location for Carlyl's merchant business, providing easy access to customers and trade routes. |
