Don't Get Weary: African Americans in 18th-Century Virginia

In the school program “Don’t Get Weary,” Carlyle House staff interprets the life and work of the enslaved persons in John Carlyle’s household, and compares and contrasts this lifestyle to other African Americans living in Virginia during the second half of the 18th century. As they tour the historic house, students encounter mannequins representing several of John Carlyle’s slaves. After listening to audio dialogues by the “slaves,” museum teachers facilitate discussions about slavery and being enslaved in 18th-century Alexandria. (SOL: VS.1a.g.h, VS.4a, USI.5c)
