20th-Century Restoration
By the late 1960s, the Carlyle House and grounds were in a state of great disrepair. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority acquired the house in 1970, thus beginning a six year project of research and restoration leading to the grand opening of the Carlyle House Historic Park in January of 1976. The inauguration of Carlyle House as a museum was the first event among Virginia’s commemorative events for the Bicentennial celebrations.
