Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket and enjoy a summer concert on one of the largest lawns in the center of Old Town! In July, Carlyle House will be hosting three area artists for a series of concerts on Thursday evenings. On July 5th, 12th and 26th Carlyle House invites you to stop by after work or a day of touring with friends and neighbors for an evening under the open sky accompanied by the music of Evergreen Shade (7/5), Esther Haynes (7/12) and Sol Roots (7/26). The concerts will begin at 6 pm and conclude at 7:30 pm. Mrs. Robert Howard and Dr. John Tole are Evergreen Shade. Their repertoire includes American period music from colonial days to the present as well as traditional and modern Celtic, folk, country, and pop tunes. Their common interest in the songs of the Civil War brought them together. While they focus on music of the Civil War, 1812, American Revolution and Colonial eras, they also perform a wide variety of other traditional and modern acoustic and folk songs including an entire program of songs with rural/environmental themes as well as Irish/Celtic, Christmas, and country music. Esther Haynes is a versatile vocalist and rhythm guitarist residing in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Her styles range from vintage jazz to swing, blues, bossas, folk, and bluegrass. Since 2002, she has been nominated for several Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies) for Debut Recording, Jazz Vocalist, Big Band Vocalist, and Jazz Duo/Group. She has received eight Wammie awards for Big Band/Swing Vocalist. Sol Roots's talent stretches from fiery rock to laid back jazz, and from funky innovative grooves to soulful ballads, drawing on a deep background in raw down-home blues. He began his musical experiences performing with roots and blues luminaries such as Guitar Gabriel, Captain Luke, and Macavine Hayes. While earning a degree in the Recording Industry, Sol performed extensively throughout Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi fronting his own rock, blues, and funk bands. Sol continued his musical voyage putting together his group Funk Root featuring musicians that have worked with bands such as Tommy Castro, Hobex, Corey Harris, Deanna Bogart, Jah Works, Mike Zito, and Squirrel Nut Zippers and more. Sol & Funk Root have performed at a variety of premier festivals and venues across the East Coast US and have been on bills with groups including Soulive, Jon Cleary, Robert Randolph, Walter Wolfman Washington, The Wood Brothers, Jackie Greene, and Bettye Lavette. Concessions such as water, chips and cookies will be available for purchase. No alcohol permitted on the property. This event is free although donations of $5 per person are suggested.
